Edit Profile

Louis Markos is a Professor of English, Scholar in Residence at Houston Baptist University, and popular ACCS event speaker.

He speaks often for classical Christian schools: to the faculty, to students, for fundraising banquets, and for graduations. Topics can range from classical Christian education in general, to virtue, to the life and writings of C.S. Lewis.

Description

Markos lectures on Ancient Greece and Rome, Middle Ages and Renaissance, and Romanticism for HBU’s Honors College and has authored 150 essays and 16 books, including “From Achilles to Christ: Why Christians Should Read the Pagan Classics,” “On the Shoulders of Hobbits: The Road to Virtue with Tolkien and Lewis,” “Apologetics for the 21st Century,” “C.S. Lewis: An Apologist for Education” (with Classical Academic Press), “Worldview Guides on the Iliad, Odyssey, and Aeneid” (with Canon Press), and “The Dreaming Stone” (a children’s novel in which his children become part of Greek mythology and learn that Christ is the myth made fact). He has also given over 300 public lectures in Rome, Oxford, British Columbia, and some 25 states. Committed to the concept of the Professor as Public Educator, Markos believes that knowledge must not be walled up in the Academy but must be disseminated to all who have ears to hear.

Payment Details: Per Mr. Markos:

The way I do my speaking outside of Houston is as a ministry. I have your group cover all of my expenses directly and then donate my honorarium directly to charity (usually my church, but sometimes a Christian group like InterVarsity or World Vision). This way we do not need any tax forms or reimbursements or receipts. You cover everything directly, I speak for free, and then I ask you to please donate money to my church or other charitable group. (Well, you will need to cut me a small check to reimburse my expenses for getting to/from the Houston airport and leaving my car in the long term parking lot.)

This is how it works. You purchase my plane ticket and hotel room directly and have someone drive me to/from the airport. You also cover my meals directly—using the hospitality method. That is, you all take me out to lunch/dinner, giving us lots of time for fellowship and discussion. As for the honorarium I ask you to donate, it can range anywhere from $1500-$3000, depending on how many speeches I give, if I have to stay the night, etc. I am very flexible in what I speak on and will work with you to get the right topic. There is only one thing I ask. I am NOT a morning person (I normally work until 5am and get up about noon—I have all afternoon classes), so you must not have me give any speeches earlier than 11am. I do best in the late afternoon and evening.

Best Days of the Week: As a professor, when speaking during the school year, speeches are best confined to the weekend to avoid missing classes.

Travel Arrangements: Prefers to have the host provide travel arrangements. See more detail above.
