I grew up with nine siblings. As you can imagine, it was rather chaotic. My parents rarely had moment to breathe. I came across this photo when I was looking through family albums for my brother’s wedding. I took a picture of it thinking of how peaceful and calm it looked in contrast to the mayhem that typically surrounded us. This piece was inspired by Frida Kahlo’s “Portrait of my Father.” I love this painting because it captures what her father lived for and his passion. In the moment this was taken, my father was living to take care of his son: to provide and comfort. My dad has always shown me how to live and what passions to pursue. Working on this colored pencil drawing made me feel at home. So, I hope to capture just half of my father’s joy and comfort that he felt lying in bed with his newborn son.
