This piece was inspired by a time in my life where I grappled with an understanding of God’s providence and the hope that comes with faith in Jesus. A few weeks ago one of my friends took his own life while he was trapped in a state of hopelessness. During the days following his tragic death I often found myself drifting into this same dark place of hopelessness until I came across Hebrews 6:18-20 which says, “…We who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to hold fast to the hope set before us. We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters into the inner place behind the curtain, where Jesus has gone as a forerunner on our behalf, having become a high priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.” Looking back on the pain and heartache that came into my life as a result of this event, I see how God used that moment to strengthen the relationship I have with Him and other people in my life. The strong contrast between the darks and lights signifies the similar contrast between the peace and the storms we sail through throughout our short time here on earth. No matter how dark it gets, we have an anchor that we can hold fast to while we are tossed upon the waves of life.
