But there’s no viable option in your area. Homeschooling has its limitations. Many have underestimated the weight of this calling. We’re here to smooth the road a bit.

Note: Times are from Day One of school. If you see “-24” months, that means 24 months before the first day of school. Timing suggestions are generalizations, and tend to represent ideal minimum times. It can be done faster in a pinch. And it can be done with more time and more care.
Phase I – Gather
-12 to -24 Months
1. -12-24 months
Find 3 or more families who share a passion for classical Christian education.
Review the IRS requirements for 501(c)(3) status: Mission, board composition, asset distribution, etc.
2. -12 months
Elect/appoint a board.
3. -12 months
Decide on a name for your school.
File paperwork with the Secretary of State in your state for a standard C-corporation (this is the only type that can become non-profit).
Phase II – Establish
-12 to -3 Months
4. -10 months
Establish articles of incorporation.
5. -8 months (or sooner if you need fundraising)
Apply for 501 (c) (3) exempt status.
Once filed with the Secretary of State, create bylaws for your organization that conform to IRS non-profit rules.
File IRS Form 1023 with the IRS to obtain 501 status. (We recommend you file as a “religious organization” rather than an “educational organization”.) When determination is made by the IRS, your 501 status will be confirmed in a “Determination Letter.” Keep this letter. Donors and others will need copies of it in the future.
6. -12 to -6 months
Find a facility.
7. -12 to -6 months
Select curriculum.

Decide when you’ll start classes and what grades you’ll initially serve.

Create essential documents.

Find students.
14. -3 to -2 months
Buy furniture, copier, phones, banking, and materials.
15. -3 to -2 months
Finalize curriculum.
Phase IV – Arrive
Week/Day 1

Host your “Back-to-School” event.

Conduct Teacher Training.
18. Day One
