Pen and Ink
This year I have been learning to create realistic work by focussing my attention on
values. I have worked with paint, charcoal, graphite sticks, different colored pebbles,
and in this case, different sized circles, in pen and ink, to create different values.
After studying the work of portrait artist, Chuck Close, who often used his own
fingerprints to create different values, I was inspired to create a self portrait of my
own, using only circles. This presented a challenge for me as I tried to translate
light and dark areas of my own face into a broad range of circular sizes. I was able
to capture the details and nuances of my face with the various circles, and enjoyed
experimenting with different methods of drawing them.
