Charcoal on Bristol Paper
Throughout the planning and drawing process, I was most inspired by the artistic works of Andrew Loomis. His book Creative Illustration, and particularly his discussion of tonal plans, was a very valuable resource, and helped to better my own understanding of composition and arrangement. I chose charcoal as the medium for this piece because of its smoothness and because it allowed me to create intense contrasts of value. The feathers of the pelican allowed me to experiment with a variety of textures, and the sloping lines of the rail that it perches on help lead the viewer’s eye to the subject. I chose this specific composition not only for its technical aspects, but also because I wanted to depict a local scene; a pelican on a pier overlooking the water is a familiar sight in my home town.
