States take further steps to marginalize traditional subjects and emphasize STEM. Colorado, Hawaii, New York, Nevada, Ohio, and Texas are setting the trend by adding endorsements to State High School diplomas.
An increasing number of states are offering an endorsement on the state high school diploma–for STEM. As state diplomas mean less and less, the progressive establishment seeks to find ways of adding value. Before classical schools follow this lead, we must realize that STEM is a movement consummating the reduction of education to job training. As Lewis says, when this happens, civilization dies. These types of programs create further pressure to emphasize technology over true education.
Of course, the study of science and math as natural philosophy are part of the Quadrivium. But, what STEM brings is very different. Much like social studies supplanted a traditional study of history, and “speech” replaced Rhetoric, progressives have a way of twisting a good thing. There is a reason that the center of STEM is technology and engineering.
We encourage ACCS schools to resist using the term STEM as it encourages parents to head down this path.
