20” x 16″, Acrylic paint on canvas
Middle Child is primarily inspired by my younger (and middle) brother, as he is the subject of the painting. The color palette was somewhat stumbled upon during the process, and the style is driven by a personal wish to learn realistic techniques. In the topic and style I believe there is no direct inspiration from a particular artist. However, in the methods I used, much credit goes to Kim Dibiasio, an art teacher at Mint Hill Arts, in North Carolina. Her class taught me to do underpaintings, and to overall take more time on a piece. Some of this technique is visible on the pillows and blankets of the bed. There is a first layer of watered-down Violet, then Payne’s Grey shadows and white highlights. Instead of going straight into the final details and values, I have learned to use layers and sketches of color to guide my painting in part because of Ms. Dibiasio.
