I have always been drawn to Bob Ross’ philosophy of “happy accidents” in art. I see this as a critical part to enjoying life that I’ve not yet mastered. In Grit, I captured what I see as my early determination to thrive and enjoy life. I was once as small and helpless as that picture, but now through growth and grit, I am in a state where I can draw that small, helpless child. This picture of me is my mother’s favorite and graces our living room atop one of her favorite tables. We are all born with a certain amount of Grit, having to struggle through life and thrive despite the world pushing against you. Grit reminds me that simply powering through and being strong is not enough because, without joy, it never reaches its full potential.
