Graphite on paper

“Forever Sisters” is a graphite drawing of my sister and me when we were little. My sister has a genetic disability similar to severe autism, and as I have grown up, I have learned to love her more and more because of it. I drew this piece to show how much I love her. I have always loved to draw with graphite ever since I was little. I chose to use it for this piece because I wanted to see how far I could push realism. I was deeply inspired by my art teacher Bethany DeVries, who makes incredibly hyper-realistic drawings. She has not only influenced me in art but has been a mentor to me in my spiritual walk as well. She uses light and shadow in a way that makes a simple scene a stunning piece of art. In my drawing, I tried to do the same by creating vivid contrasts between the reflections and shadows. I hope that in my future drawings, I will be able to eventually reach the hyper-realism that Mrs. DeVries so easily creates.
