Summary:

Over the past 3 years, I have served as the founding Head of School at Veritas Christi Classical Academy. As head of VCCA, my responsibilities include the following:
• Curated resources and developed a curriculum guide to provide our students with a rich feast of the good and great books of Western Civilization, by learning to use the tools of learning, i.e. the liberal arts.
• Developed teacher training by meeting one-on-one with teachers, facilitating monthly training sessions, observing classrooms, and creating study guides and teacher handbooks
• Cultivated a Christ-centered culture, ensuring that students, staff, and families grow together in their faith to become virtuous ambassadors of Christ.
• Communicated with families and the community through newsletters, social media, informational meetings, open houses, and celebration events
• Designed marketing material such as brochures, website, school signage, and school identity, including logo (I have over 25 years of experience in graphic design)
• Managed day-to-day operations, such as scheduling, ordering supplies, reports, bookkeeping, developing handbooks, and monitoring the needs of teachers and parents
• Taught classes, which include literature, math, science, history, Latin, logic and art.
My educational philosophy has been influenced by David Hicks, Kevin Clark and Ravi Jain, Robert Littlejohn, Charles Evans, and Charlotte Mason. True Christian education or paideia is passing on our Christian inheritance to the next generation. This centers on nurturing students in wisdom and virtue, equipping them to think with discernment, communicate eloquently, properly order their loves, and glorify God with their lives. These qualities are essential for raising the next generation of leaders who will impact their communities for Christ.

Additional Information

Additional classical training: My classical training has been self-directed, shaped by extensive reading of authors such as David Hicks, Kevin Clark and Ravi Jain, Robert Littlejohn, Charles Evans, and Charlotte Mason. For the past four and a half years, I have been reading through the Great Books with a group that meets online once a month for a Socratic discussion. I have also attended ACCS conferences and participated in a pilot Incubator program for start-up schools through the ACCS. I have put these principles into practice by founding a classical Christian school, serving as head of school, and teaching literature, math, science, Latin, history, logic, and art.

Why I want to teach at a classical school: I have always been interested in education and learning. I spent many years developing curriculum for the progressive education system. The more I studied Classical Christian education, the more convinced I became that there is a fundamental difference between how Christians should educate their children and how most students are educated in today’s schools. Three years ago, a small group of families started a Classical Christian school in our community. I had the privilege of serving as head of school and teacher during that time. Our school is closing at the end of this year, but the change and growth I’ve seen in our students has been incredible. I am convinced that there is no better way to educate children than by directing their affections, first and foremost, to the true, the good, and the beautiful.
