Summary:

My desire is to disciple the nations, beginning with the younger generations, bringing them into Christ’s church as faithful members of his body. When I first became a Christian, I had very little discipleship and people to hold me accountable. As a result, my early Christian walk was tumultuous. I do not want others, especially the younger group of Christians, to have the same experience. Discipleship begins in the church, but since the Lord’s Day is once a week, discipleship must continue throughout the week. Christian education is the perfect place for this kind of discipleship to happen.

Additional Qualifications: I have arranged biblical curriculum for Sunday schools series while at New Venture Christian Fellowship. I also taught some adult Sunday school while there. I have been catechizing my own children in family worship for just over a decade now. At Calvin, I have delivered some of the chapel messages, and also coached some junior high boys’ sports.

Additional Experience with CCE: In my short time at Calvin, I have been introduced to Charlotte Mason and Susan Bauer. They have both been a great help to me. I am also thankful for my time in seminary, which introduced me to classical education. I have been able to implement ideas and methods from these realms into my pedagogy for the classroom.

Interests and Philosophy

Hobbies, Interests, and Family: My hobbies are reading and writing, and then more, reading and writing. But when I am not in the books, I enjoy most sports, especially football (Americans call it soccer), and have recently taken up fishing with my boys. My wife and I have two daughters and two sons. Our oldest daughter has made us grandparents to a beautiful grand daughter! She right now is our main interest. My reading interests are in theology, namely, Reformation era, Systematics, and Covenant Theology. I am currently seeking application into a ThM program at RTS, taking one online class at a time.

Top 5 Books: Augustine, City of God
Augustine, The Confessions
John Calvin, Institutes of the Christian Religion
C. S. Lewis, Mere Christianity
Boethius, Consolation of Philosophy

Top 3 Books: James Smith, You Are What You Love
John Calvin, A Little Book on the Christian Life
Thomas Watson, The Lord’s Prayer

These are the latest books that I have read, and not completely voluntarily. I read them for a class on Personal Sanctification. The class itself was very edifying and encouraging. Calvin’s work I was familiar with before, and of course, I know the Lord’s Prayer, but these works have tremendously helped me. I am glad that I read them, and would read them again.

Most Influential Books: Michael Horton, Ordinary
Meredith Kline, Kingdom Prologue
Jonathan Landry Cruse, What Happens When We Worship
Martin Luther, Galatians
Geerhardus Vos, Biblical Theology
Athanasius, On the Incarnation

Theology: My leanings theologically are to the Reformed confessions and catechisms because they are faithful to what the Bible teaches, as described in the Three Forms of Unity and the Westminster Standards.

Belief in the inerrancy of Scripture?: Yes

Notes on Scripture: Westminster Confession of Faith chapter 1 and Belgic Confession article 7 explain my view on Scripture best.

Additional Information

Additional classical training: I did not have any classic training before teaching at Calvin Christian School. I only first was informed minimally in seminary, as to the foundation in ancient Greece and Rome. I was happy to find, that after months and months of teaching, I was doing some of the things thought to be classical. I drive dialogue out of students in class, we do lots of reading, writing, and narrating. I also learned a lot in our many in service trainings as a faculty.

Why I want to teach at a classical school: I feel that Christian education is the only real education, because it humbly and reverently takes seriously the very God who commands our growth as human beings according to his image, and as Christians, according to the re-imaging in Christ Jesus. A well-rounded, holistic education, must take the triune God of creation and redemption into account.

Final thoughts: Another hobby, and my family’s favorite, is my love for cooking!
