Summary:

I have five years’ teaching experience at classical Christian schools in Canada. During the first two years, I was a Gr. 7-8 homeroom teacher; the second two years, I took on the role of Latin teacher; this past year I helped to start a new collaborative school, serving as the headmaster and Gr. 8-9 teacher. My passion and gifts are for classroom teaching, specifically in the Logic-Rhetoric stages. I am proficient in beginner-intermediate Latin (have taught Latin for Children A, B, C, Latin Alive 1-2, and part of Familia Romana). I studied biblical Greek and Hebrew in seminary, and I took conversational German for three years in high school. Hence, learning and teaching languages is a passion of mine.

My formal education is in religion and theology, with a focus in historical theology. I have lectured on Church History at my local Bible college and taught several adult Christian education classes on Church History in the local church. I enjoy teaching Logic and Literature (primarily 19th-20th century). I have also taught Gr. 6-8 Singapore Math and tutored Gr. 9-10 Saxon Math. I play several musical instruments well enough, with formal training in guitar. I love to play soccer and basketball. I enjoy cooking with my wife and visiting new places. We have five children (newborn to 10 years).

Interests and Philosophy

Hobbies, Interests, and Family: I have been married for 12 years (May 18, 2013) to my beautiful wife Vanessa. We have five children: Gwendolyn, Felix, Rowan, Penelope, and Simone. We enjoy camping and going to the beach in the summer months. In the winter months, we go sledding and build snow forts in our backyard. Spring and fall are great times to go for family walks or bike rides.

Top 5 Books: Dostoevsky, Brothers Karamazov:
This was my second time reading it. I am still working to grasp its significance. I appreciate Peter Kreeft’s take on the book: the three brothers are (albeit, imperfect) types of Christ, the Prophet, Priest, and King.

Chesterton, Orthodoxy:
Chesterton is my favourite author, and this was my second time reading Orthodoxy. He has a gift for engendering wonder, causing us to see familiar things in an unfamiliar light. He does precisely this with the Christian faith. Chesterton is witty, profound, and hilarious.

Twain, Huckleberry Finn:
This is my favourite work of American fiction. Far from being a “racist” work, I believe that Twain artfully exposes the hypocrisy and depravity of Southern culture at the time. Jim is the hero of the whole story, laying down his life for the sake of his friend Tom (cf. John 15:13).

Dostoevsky, The Idiot:
I was impacted by the character of Prince Muishkin, whose “almost pastoral simplicity,” in the words of another character, is both disarming and inspiring. Though he misunderstands social cues and often makes a “fool” of himself, the purity of his intentions and the clarity of his perceptions make him a highly noble character.

Irenaeus, Against Heresies:
This is a profoundly important work, detailing a variety of early Gnostic heresies and describing the nature of the Church and her defense against such perversions of apostolic teaching.

Top 3 Books: Anthony Esolen, Defending Boyhood:
I am seeking to grow both as a father and an educator. Esolen offers a number of scathing critiques of the hyper-egalitarian, feminized educational institutions of our day. He argues that they present an attack on boyhood. He takes the reader through a series of vignettes from literature and Scripture, to show what the education of boys can (and, in his opinion, should) look like.

J. K. Rowling, The Order of the Phoenix:
My wife and I are reading through the entire series. We enjoy Rowling’s creativity in the world has built (literally enchanting our own world), the character development of Harry, and the epic battle between good and evil. I know that some Christians look askance on this series, but I believe they can be read profitably with discernment.

Plato, Euthyphro/Apology:
I want to expand my knowledge of the ancient world and Greek philosophy. Reading Plato’s dialogues is a great way to achieve both goals.

Most Influential Books: The Bible (probably assumed, but I can’t omit it): particularly the Psalms, Wisdom Literature, and Gospel of John
Lewis, Mere Christianity
Lewis, The Screwtape Letters
Lewis, The Four Loves
Chesterton, What’s Wrong with the World
Chesterton, The Everlasting Man
Chesterton, Father Brown Stories (my introduction to Chesterton)

Preferred Denomination Type:

Current Church: Gorrie Bible Fellowship

Current Church Denomination: Bible Fellowship, but grew up Baptist

Current Church Membership: Church has no membership

Current Church Attendance: Weekly

Support of Traditional Marriage: Yes

Theology: At core, I am a “Bible Christian,” for I believe that in Scripture God has communicated to mankind the things requisite to salvation. However, I esteem tradition as being of great value in interpreting Scripture and living out the faith. I view the historic creeds (Apostles & Nicene) as standards of orthodoxy and aids in achieving unity across denominational lines. Therefore, I consider myself a “mere Christian,” to use Lewis’s language. I have fellowship with Anglican, Baptist, and Charismatic Christians who are committed to orthodoxy and charity.

Belief in the inerrancy of Scripture?: Yes

Notes on Scripture: God’s word is true and trustworthy in all that it affirms. The word of the LORD is flawless (Ps. 18:30). All things necessary to salvation are contained in God’s word (2 Tim. 3:15), though we can and should glean wisdom from extrabiblical sources. Where human “wisdom” runs counter to God’s revealed will, we must hold to the latter and reject the former; for God cannot lie (Tit. 1:2), and his word does not err.

Additional Information

Additional classical training: I have completed Level 1 and most of Level 2 certification on Classical U.

Why I want to teach at a classical school: I have seen the fruits of a classical Christian education in my children’s lives, and I, too, have been enriched as a teacher (e.g. learning Latin and logic, studying great books). I want to continue growing in wisdom and virtue by belonging to a strong community with that shared aim.
