Summary
Harkness seminar discussion is an approach to student-driven classroom discussion. The goal is that students will do the important work of thoroughly preparing to discuss, and then take the lead in carrying out discussions. It has as its purpose that the student will “form in his own mind, by the use of his own powers, a complete and truthful conception or notion of the facts and truths in the lesson …” (John Milton Gregory). The teacher does not give up either authority or curricular control, but gradually shifts more and more of the intellectual work to the students.
