2012 Workshop Talk | 0:43:18 | 7-12, Rhetoric & Composition
Summary
For ten years, teaching high school students to write quality research papers has been a difficult challenge for us at Whitefield Academy. In the last two years we have implemented a curriculum that has significantly improved our studentsÍ thinking, research, and writing of their 20-plus-page annual thesis paper. Hermongenes’ On Issues is “a fundamental but complex and neglected component of mature Greek Rhetoric” (Heath, p. v) and became available to those of us who do not read classical Greek with Malcolm HeathÍs translation and commentary. Historically, issues or stasis theory was taught after the progymnasmata and before formal rhetoricÍs canon of invention. This workshop will explore the practical implementation of Hermogenes’ system in a 21st century, classical Christian upper school.
