Entry Q
11″ x 14″, white charcoal on black charcoal paper
My charcoal drawing, entitled “Alas, Poor Yorrick”, is an illustration of Act V scene I of Shakespeare’s Hamlet. I chose white charcoal on a black paper background because it lends itself well to dramatic lighting and causes the subject to stand out. It almost creates the appearance of the spotlight, fitting the theme of a drama. I was particularly inspired by the contemporary artist Matt Fussell. I referenced his white charcoal tutorial in the creation of this piece, and I was inspired by his use of negative space and shadow to create realistic portraits.
