Position Information
Position desired: Teacher
Subjects you can teach: 7-12 Theology Teacher
Willing to relocate to: Anywhere in US, Northeast
Summary:
I am passionate about teaching future ministers and teachers, as well as all
Christians, how to rightly divide the Word of truth. In my studies, I have found the
Old Testament to be so rich in meaning for the believer, but it is too often
misunderstood or even overlooked. I am seeking a position where I can utilize my
experience in exegesis to help others study God’s Word better.

Employment History:
Additional Qualifications: Proficient in biblical Hebrew and biblical Greek
Additional Experience with CCE: I was homeschooled and used curriculums such as Veritas Press for part of my schooling.
Hobbies, Interests, and Family: My wife, our daughters, and I enjoy reading fiction together, watching shows, hiking, biking,
camping, and (once) skydiving. Personally, I love to read and think about different
theological topics from a biblically theological and historical perspective, and I adore good
stories, whether they come to me in book or movie form.
Top 5 Books: Augustine’s On Genesis
Lewis’s Screwtape Letters
Bunyan’s Pilgrim’s Progress
Early Christian Writings (a collection of the patristic fathers’ works)
Calvin’s Institutes
Top 3 Books: The Bronze Bow by Elizabeth George Speare. This book was mentioned in passing leading up to Easter of this year. I had read it before, but wanted to read it again. The author gives an interesting perspective on Christ.
Waiting Isn’t a Waste by Mark Vroegop. My family and I have been in a waiting period for some time, and I want to be intentional about waiting on the Lord.
The Deathly Hallows by J.K. Rowling. My wife and I were revisiting this enjoyable series together.
Most Influential Books: Scripture, of course, is primary in influencing my thinking. The works of Dr. Gary Schnittjer, particularly, The Israel Story, have greatly influenced the way I read the Bible. The works of John Walton, similarly, have shaped the way I think about the Scriptures. Many of the church fathers’ writings have had an influence on my theology – those of Augustine, Irenaeus, Origen, Calvin, and Luther especially.
Preferred Denomination Type: Reformed, Anglican/Episcopal, Other
Current Church: St. James Church, Evangelical and Reformed
Current Church Denomination: Non-denominational (somewhere in the Reformed and Lutheran traditions)
Current Church Membership: Yes
Current Church Attendance: Weekly
Support of Traditional Marriage: Yes
Theology: I am somewhere between Lutheran and Reformed in my leanings. Sacramentally, I agree strongly with Lutheran teachings. In regard to soteriology, I lean more toward Reformed traditions, especially Calvin’s teachings, though I tend to take a more nuanced view than many Reformed do. I am squarely in the high protestant tradition, but between the traditions therein, I do not fit perfectly with any one.
Belief in the inerrancy of Scripture?: Yes
Notes on Scripture: I agree wholeheartedly that God’s Word conveys his will to us perfectly. Where I would hesitate with statements such as the Chicago Statement of Inerrancy is in regard to their claims about history and science in Scripture. I think we need to be careful here not to impose our own modern understanding of historiography and science into ancient writings that had no concept of these.
Additional classical training: I was homeschooled, so I have some familiarity with classical education. In high school, I spent three years studying Latin, but have not spent time with it since. I have read many of what would be considered “the classics.” I have also studied Greek for several years, but only Koine Greek, not Classical.
Why I want to teach at a classical school: I love the idea of shaping the person, not just the mind, in education. As Christians we are particularly called not just to intellectual knowledge, but to a reshaping of our lives into the image of Christ. I see a great need in our church for better education when it comes to Scripture. We have forgotten how to read it and study it well, and too often, the church relies on theology to shape their reading of Scripture rather than Scripture shaping their theology. I would like to help mold young Christians into those who can rightly divide the Word of Truth and in turn teach the next generation.
Final thoughts: I have a heart for the church and for better dialogue between Christians. I am pained when I see so much information available online and in books that does not teach the gospel well, and when I see many Christians accusing each other of poor biblical knowledge instead of sharpening each other by opening the Word of God together.
