Description

“Studying formal logic can be intimidating without the right help, but knowing how to think logically isn’t just for “experts.” Logic should be your secret weapon. It’s the tool for learning how to use other tools. It’s the bones that give a clenched fist its structure (and knuckles). With that in mind, we have painstakingly designed Intermediate Logic for everyday students, teachers, and parents who’ve never used truth tables or formal proofs of validity to work with syllogisms, but who know just how important and applicable learning logic is.” – Logos Press

“Studying formal logic can be intimidating without the right help, but knowing how to think logically isn’t just for “experts.” Logic should be your secret weapon. It’s the tool for learning how to use other tools. It’s the bones that give a clenched fist its structure (and knuckles). With that in mind, we have painstakingly designed Introductory Logic for everyday students, teachers, and parents who’ve never tackled syllogisms or fallacies before, but who know just how important learning logic is.

In Introductory Logic, you’ll get the benefit of James B. Nance’s twenty years of teaching experience as you learn the fundamentals you need to think well wherever you are, including: How to properly define terms for maximum precision and accuracy — and thus win the debate, How to form and interpret statements, the building blocks of logical thought, How to compose valid syllogisms, and — just as importantly — expose the invalid fakes using counterexamples, How to analyze arguments in normal English, How to identify and deflect informal fallacies (one of the most instantly applicable parts of logic), And much more!” – Logos Press

Level: 5-8

Description

“The Reasoning & Reading workbooks develop basic language and thinking skills that build the foundation for reading comprehension. Exercises reinforce reading as a critical reasoning activity. Many exercises encourage students to come up with their own response in instances in which there is no single correct answer. In other cases, exercises lend themselves to students working collaboratively to see how many different answers satisfy a question.” – Classical Academic Press

Description

Watch out: There’s an epidemic of kind-hearted people adopting the adorable yet treacherous creatures known as informal fallacies. So, we’ve compiled this FIELD GUIDE FOR CLEAR THINKERS to make sure you, dear reader, can identify and exterminate fifty of the most fluffy and most venomous adorable fallacies. Inside you’ll find inventive illustrations, clear descriptions, helpful exercises, semester- & year-long schedules, and all the clever analysis a person might need to steer clear of all the little fallacies.

Level: 7-8

Description

“The Discovery of Deduction: An Introduction to Formal Logic will welcome your students into the fascinating realm of formal, deductive logic. Formal logic studies how an argument is put together—the form or structure of an argument.

The Discovery of Deduction (Student Edition) is geared directly toward students as young as 8th grade, making a subject usually reserved for study in college accessible and relevant to middle and high school, logic-stage students. The book emphasizes the practical and real-world application of soundly structured deductive logic. Using methods such as Socratic dialogue, ample discussion, and integration of other subjects, the book teaches formal logic in the best way for dialectic students.” – Classical Academic Press

Other Information

Level: 7-12

Description

The Bluedorn family, longtime promoters of Christian classical education, encountered content problems in most critical thinking and logic resources. So the Bluedorn brothers, Nathaniel and Hans, put their heads together and came up with this excellent introduction to practical logic from their conservative Christian homeschoolers’ perspective. Subtitled Thirty-Eight Lessons on How to Recognize Bad Reasoning, The Fallacy Detective uses humor, historical references, and real life situations to help teens learn to think and express themselves clearly. Comic strips from Calvin and Hobbes, Dilbert, Peanuts, and Nuna and Toodles (the Bluedorn brothers’ own creation) are a nice touch. Cartoon and comic illustrations, humorous examples, and a very reader-friendly writing style make this the sort of course students will enjoy.” – Christian Book

The Thinking Toolbox

Other Information

Level: 7-12

Description

“The Bluedorn brothers authored The Fallacy Detective, and The Thinking Toolbox is really a next step up from that book. Suggested for ages thirteen and up, it still focuses on informal logic, just presenting more complex examples, applications, and questions. The book is divided into three main section with an additional smaller section of suggested activities and logic games to play. The three main sections are Tools for Thinking, Tools for Opposing Viewpoints, and Tools for Science. The first section, Tools for Thinking, follows the same vein as The Fallacy Detective focusing primarily on arguments. It addresses topics such as differences between discussions, disagreements, arguments, and fights; facts, inferences, and opinions; identifying the premises and conclusion of an argument; and when it is wise not to use logic. I was really glad to see that lesson 7, considering opponents’ arguments, uses some of the hard questions about Genesis as the first example. They don’t supply you with the counterarguments here, but they will make you think about what you need to know to enter into a challenging discussion of the topic.” Cathy Duffy Reviews
