Ascent to Love: A Guide to Dante’s Divine Comedy

Other Information

Level: 7-12

Description

“As the unsurpassed Christian epic poem, Dante’s Divine Comedy provides not only far more personality and emotional depth than the pagan epics, it opens up all the issues on which Western history turns-truth, beauty, goodness, sin, sanctification, and triumph. In this guide, Peter J. Leithart brings his rich biblical-typological insight to bear in opening up the Comedy for students, high school and up, mainly the sort of kids who keep looking for the jokes in the “comedy.” After examining the meaning and place of the courtly love tradition leading up to Dante, the heart of the guide walks us carefully through the craft and symbolisms of each progressive stage-Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradiso. Each section contains helpful study questions.”  – Google Books

Other Information

Level: 7-12

Description

Shakespeare was a great observer, who was able to see deeply into the patterns of human character. Dare anyone say that these insights are irrelevant to living in the real world? For many in an older generation the Bible and the Collected Shakespeare were the two indispensable books.

Leithart’s perceptive walk through these plays is written especially for a high school level course, but older students will benefit as well. The six plays discussed are: Henry V, Julius Caesar, Hamlet, Macbeth, The Taming of the Shrew, and Much Ado About Nothing.” – Logos Press

Other Information

Level: 7-12

Description

“Author, Janice Campbell wants to prepare students well for rigorous college work, so she directs them to do their own independent research and writing while reading each classic work. Truly designed for independent study, the only “oversight” is the requirement for a writing evaluator to use the provided Evaluation Rubric form to let students know how well they are satisfying the demands of each written assignment that is the culmination of the study of each work. Nevertheless, students would benefit greatly if they could meet for a once-a-week session with other students to discuss their work.” – Cathy Duffy Reviews

Miniatures and Morals: The Christian Novels of Jane Austen

Other Information

Level: 7-12

Description

“Not only are Austen’s novels still widely read, they continue to influence modern film and literature. In both their moral content and their focused, highly detailed, “miniaturist” execution, they reveal Austen’s mastery of the art of fiction and her concern for Christian virtues exercised within communities. She entertains, edifies, and challenges men and women readers alike.

From theological and literary angles, Leithart analyzes character and theme while summarizing each of Austen’s major works — Pride & Prejudice, Northanger Abbey, Sense & Sensibility, Mansfield Park, Emma, and Persuasion. Including helpful review and thought questions for each section, this book is an excellent introduction to Austen for students and for all who desire a richer appreciation of her enduring genius.” – Logos Press

Walking to Wisdom Literature Guide Series

Other Information

Level: 7-12

Description

“Stories give us an experience of certain knowledge, which is why how we feel about the book is part of what the book is teaching us. We have kept these things in heart and mind while making The Inklings Collection of literature guides, to be used in conjunction with the work of C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, and Dorothy Sayers. We named them “Walking to Wisdom” because acquiring wisdom happens at the pace of a walk and with a mentor. We have sought to guide students through these marvelous books as well as in the skill of reading these particular texts.

Tolkien, Sayers, and Lewis all expressed their ideas in both fiction and nonfiction. The fiction includes dramatic literature, short fiction, long fiction, epistolary satire, and allegory. To shed light on their fiction, we have incorporated some nonfiction essays of Lewis and Sayers in the guides that cover their works. We strongly encourage students to take a full year and use all eight guides as a twentieth-century British literature course, though working through even one guide will be beneficial. Each literature guide both stands on its own and interacts with the others, with sidebar comments and thematic continuity. These books will change students’ lives and, in the meantime, teach them how to read with delight, depth, and skill, as well as prepare them to write well.” – Classical Academic Press
